A $5
million donation by the Harris Corporation enabled the
Florida Institute of Technology to embark on the new three-story
Harris Center for Science and Engineering. Offices, classrooms
and laboratories for the marine biology and aquaculture
programs will be located on the first floor with computer
science and biology laboratories and offices on the second
floor. The third floor will house the Harris Institute
for Assured Information, which includes office space,
computer laboratories and a multi-use media presentation
area. Specialized mechanical and electrical systems meet
each laboratorys unique needs while specially designed
plumbing systems provide for saltwater distribution, central
compressed air, acid waste and fish tank aeration for
the marine biology and aquaculture laboratories. The electrical
design features special power systems for specific laboratory
functions, indirect/direct lighting for lab spaces and
wireless communications systems, and an emergency generator.
