Today's date represents Pi, one of the most frequently used numbers in many technical fields, including engineering. We celebrate Pi Day this year as we unveil TLC's further commitment to realizing high performance environments. We introduce you to the PEAK Institute, or PI.
PI is a technical resource center created to support all aspects of high performance buildings that have sought TLC's expertise. Led by recently appointed PI Director, Brian Lomel, PE, LEED Fellow, CxA, WELL AP, PI is primarily focused on connecting TLC staff as we solve complex applications of new building technologies, enabling us to challenge clients with ideas, solutions, data and practical operations strategies. "Many, but not all, TLC projects have unique technical requirements or demanding high performance requirements. PI positions us to excel on those projects. By realigning our resources, we're assuring that our clients and their complex projects have the best knowledge available, where and when they need it. By intertwining the PI core team with staff from every TLC operating unit, we support our continued growth and consistency of experience for our clients," stated Michael Sheerin, CEO of TLC.
As a think tank, PI collects TLC's research efforts on rapidly moving developments in the building industry. As PI team members evaluate the latest trends and developments, their unbiased opinions serve TLC clients well. Recent examples include creating energy modeling algorithms to accurately evaluate dynamic glazing options and developing circadian lighting strategies to support WELL Building StandardTM-focused work environments. Lomel concluded, "PI is our innovation hub where we gather, evaluate and share technical and practical knowledge. The collective expertise of the TLC team leads the industry. PI positions us to make the most of that to benefit our clients by driving innovation and creativity into our designs."
In addition to Brian, the PI core includes Kim E Shinn, PE, LEED Fellow, CxA, BEMP; David Miller, PE, CxA, LEED AP BD+C, EMP; and Cory Duggin, PE, LEED AP BD+C, BEMP. Additional TLC staff move in and out of PI based on their unique knowledge or skills and their specific project assignments. PI supports all TLC design teams to get the support they need, when they need it – and exceed our clients' expectations. Contact your local TLC office to get a taste of TLC's PI!
Kim E Shinn, PE, LEED Fellow, CxA, BEMP, is being honored by ENR as a Newsmaker of the Year on April 13 in New York City. Kim was selected for this prestigious honor for his dedication to educating architects, engineers, contractors and owners on how to use energy modeling through the "Wizard Show," an audience participation, no-holds barred competition. Cory Duggin, one of the PI guys, wrote an article recently featured in a cover story of Consulting-Specifying Engineer, discussing "Five Steps to success with ASHRAE 90.1."
