With
a host of environmentally friendly features, the new Southwest
Parking Garage Complex is on track for LEED® Silver
with the potential for a higher certification. The garage
will become one of the first garages in the nation to
be LEED certified. Featuring a facade that looks like
a storefront rather than a typical garage, the five-level
structure is designed to blend into the campus fabric
and integrate with the network of walkways and bike paths.
The contemporary design features a two-story glass customer
service arcade and outdoor queuing for students who require
parking permits. The project included demolition of the
Transportation and Parking Office and incorporating a
new 9,000-sf office on the ground level of the garage.
Additionally, chilled water lines that were buried beneath
the garage were rerouted and an overhead medium-voltage
power line was demolished and new medium-voltage feeds
and metering were provided to the existing building and
lighting affected by the overhead demolition. All this
was accomplished on a fast-track schedule for design-build
project delivery in late 2009.
