The new VA Outpatient Clinic in Cape Coral is designed to meet the changing needs of veterans in the region. The four-story clinic will provide state-of-the-art primary and specialty care including dental and out-patient surgery, mental health services, radiology and laboratory services. The goal was to create a high quality heathcare environment that minimizes operating costs and reduces energy consumption. Early on, TLC provided energy modeling services that helped drive the decisions that would affect the building’s overall energy consumption. The resulting design incorporates measures that will reduce energy consumption by 38.72% compared with the average base case based on ASHRAE 90.1-2004 – significantly higher than the VA requirement of 30%. The building was designed to meet the VA’s Sustainable Design and Energy Reduction manual and other VA guidelines. Serving the clinic is the ground-level central plant featuring three chillers, three cooling towers, one heat recovery chiller and three boilers. The MEP and fire protection systems are modular in design, allowing for the easy addition of equipment to accommodate future building expansion. And because the building is considered “mission critical,” the project had to meet requirements for the VA Physical Security Design Manual to protect against natural or man-made disasters. The VA-owned clinic will replace the current leased VA Clinic in Ft. Myers.
