The new East Elementary School became the first public school in Florida to achieve LEED® for Schools certification. Two 200-ton, high efficiency air-cooled chillers and air handlers, low-flow faucets and toilets, motion-activated lights, and indirect lighting are only some of the sustainable design components. The building’s HVAC system uses air-to-air energy recovery ventilators which reduced the building’s total cooling load by approximately 20%. The 100-kW backup generator is designed to provide backup power at least 48 hours for life-safety lighting, the elevator, the walk-in cooler and freezer, and the motorized gate for in the event of a blackout. In addition, because the school is a designated community shelter, the county will provide a portable generator designed to keep the entire building operational in the event of a hurricane or extended emergency. The ceiling and vinyl floor tiles, carpeting, filters used for heating, ventilation and air conditioning, even the building’s structural steel framing are all made of recyclable or renewable materials.
