Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing has been touched with gold – U.S. Green Building Council LEED® Gold. The building is equipped with CO2 monitoring, indoor chemical & pollutant control, lighting controls, low-toxicity materials, 25% recycled content and reduced energy consumption that save more than 17% in cost compared to a traditional building. Floors are made of bamboo, a quick-growing, renewable plant. The reflective roof and glazed windows let in light but not heat. Outdoor lamps are strategically aimed to avoid creating light pollution.

In addition to designing low-energy and ecologically sensitive systems, TLC engineers helped the university obtain EPA testing to verify indoor air quality rather than undertake the normal flush-out process. This saved two weeks of construction time.By incorporating principals of feng shui with sustainable design, the College of Nursing is on the cutting edge both therapeutically and technologically. The three-story structure is built around a courtyard framed with a cylindrical entry atrium. In keeping with the college’s philosophy that nursing is a profession grounded in caring, the courtyard features spaces for meditation and contemplation, as well as lush landscaping and a water sculpture. The west side of the building has spaces for public clients, a holistic practice, a museum of nursing, practical simulation nursing labs, faculty offices, and a two-story open circulation gallery. The student-oriented east side has graduate offices, high-tech classrooms and seminar rooms, instructional resources and the Dean’s office. Completing the complex is the 300-seat, long-distance learning lecture hall.

After initially achieving Silver certification, the project was resubmitted to the USGBC for review and recertification. Lynn College of Nursing is FAU’s first LEED Gold-certified building.
