Flexibility, ease of maintenance and energy efficiency were the design goals for the new 60-bed hospital. Individual controls in the resident rooms allow the patients to adjust the temperature to their comfort level. The air handling units throughout the building are equipped with high-efficiency filters to maintain air quality. Electronic building controls allow the maintenance staff to monitor the functioning and efficiency of the systems. The hospital’s two operating rooms are served by an air handling unit equipped with a heat wheel that dries the air. This energy-efficient design allows the temperature in the OR’s to achieve 60 degrees Fahrenheit without the need for a booster chiller. Occupancy sensors in the rooms feature an unoccupied mode whereby the air flow is reduced to code minimum, pressure is maintained by a pressure monitor, and the temperature is reset to improve energy savings. The hospital is designed to remain operational for at least four days in the event of an electrical blackout.
