Florida's
first LEED-certified elementary school, Neil Armstrong
features high efficiency chillers and air handlers, low-flow
faucets and toilets, motion-activated lights, and indirect
lighting are some of the sustainable design features at
the school. Materials such as ceiling and vinyl floor
tiles, carpeting, filters used for heating, ventilation
and air conditioning, and the buildings structural
steel framing are all made of recyclable or renewable
products. The design achieved two LEED EA c1 points for
a 14% reduction in energy consumption compared with the
baseline. Other sustainable features include:
Water savings of 343,381 gallons per year.
Energy savings of 1,465 Mbtu a year.
No chlorofluorocarbons or hydro-chlorofluorocarbons
refrigerants used, so zero ozone depletion potential.
Constructed on the same site as the original Neil
Armstrong Elementary School.
Zero potable water used for landscape irrigation.
Green housekeeping program instituted for the entire
school district. |
