Florida's first LEED-certified elementary school, Neil Armstrong features high efficiency chillers and air handlers, low-flow faucets and toilets, motion-activated lights, and indirect lighting are some of the sustainable design features at the school. Materials such as ceiling and vinyl floor tiles, carpeting, filters used for heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and the building’s structural steel framing are all made of recyclable or renewable products. The design achieved two LEED EA c1 points for a 14% reduction in energy consumption compared with the baseline. Other sustainable features include:
• Water savings of 343,381 gallons per year.
• Energy savings of 1,465 Mbtu a year.
• No chlorofluorocarbons or hydro-chlorofluorocarbons refrigerants used, so zero ozone depletion potential.
• Constructed on the same site as the original Neil Armstrong Elementary School.
• Zero potable water used for landscape irrigation.
• Green housekeeping program instituted for the entire school district.
