Offering
both a top-tier clinic and a state-of-the-art pediatric
hospital, the new 95-bed Nemours Childrens Hospital
at Lake Nona will help solidify Central Florida as a
leader in healthcare facilities. Designing the six-story
hospital from the ground up allowed the team to select
the best design techniques and advanced technology to
provide a continuum of care that will follow the young
patients and their families through outpatient and inpatient
treatment. Along with providing world-class healthcare,
the hospital will be energy efficient and sustainable.
The building is registered for USGBC LEED® for Healthcare.
Early on, TLC computer-modeled the building envelope,
HVAC systems and lighting systems to simulate various
energy performance scenarios. This enabled us to drive
the design decisions by evaluating the benefits of different
energy efficiency measures. TLC also facilitated the
green design charrette, where team members brainstormed
strategies for the site, energy, water, indoor air quality,
and materials. The two-level, stand-alone central energy
plant, connected to the hospital by a utility corridor,
features three 1300-ton chillers, six cooling towers
and one 300-ton heat recovery chiller. Emergency power
is provided by three 2,250-kW, medium voltage generators
with three days of diesel fuel. The entire facility
can operate on emergency power.
