With
its striking facade and 40-foot windows overlooking the
Halifax River, the News-Journal Center in Daytona Beach
serves both as a riverfront landmark and an economic engine
for downtown. The three-story, 98,000-sf building has
a visual arts gallery, an 860-seat proscenium theater
with orchestra pit, and a 260-seat studio theater. Located
on the first floor are the lobby-reception area, rehearsal
rooms, exhibit gallery, faculty and staff offices, dance
studios, conference rooms, box office, gift shop, catering
kitchen, and cafe. The second and third floors house the
main theater and the three-level pre-function space with
waiting area. The HVAC design features two 300-ton water-cooled
chillers served by two cooling towers for a total cooling
capacity of 600 tons. The Direct Digital Controls system
allows for computerized maintenance to adjust the comfort
levels in the various areas of the center. In the main
theater, the two-level catwalk provides the framework
for the professional lighting, sound, hoists and stage-rigging
systems. The 4,000-amp electrical service includes a battery
backup UPS system, fire alarm system and access security
system. Backup power for the life safety systems is provided
by a 500-kW generator. The entire building is protected
by the sprinkler system. TLC engineers worked closely
with the theatrical consulting firm, Jones & Phillips
Associates of Lafayette, Indiana, and the acoustic consultant,
BAI of Austin, Texas, to ensure that the power, lighting,
sound attenuation and acoustic quality met the centers
specialized needs. |
