When
a tornado destroyed Sumter Regional Hospital on March
1, 2007, FEMA stepped in to begin rebuilding almost immediately.
The day after the storm, tents complete with generator-driven
lights and power were in place to serve urgent care functions.
Within a month, modular buildings were laid out on site
to allow more hospital functions to be restored and more
staff back in action. Eventually, the hospital grew to
more than 300 modules, condensing what had been a 250,000-sf
hospital into fewer than 70,000 sf and creating an 80-bed,
fully functional hospital in less than six months. Then
the process of determining a replacement hospital began
in earnest. Among the design criteria: architectural efficiency
to avoid issues of patient flow and adjacency; energy
efficiency to maximize resources; and flexible use of
space. Disaster preparedness was also a top priority,
including hardening protection of tele-data systems and
concern for the roof system and roof-mounted equipment.
The state-of-the-art facility will provide primary care/general
medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, emergency medicine, orthopedics,
general surgery, cardiology, urology, pediatrics and rehabilitative
services, among others. A support services building and
walk-up clinic are included in the project.
The hospital will continue its commitment to provide charity
and indigent care.
