Ralph Baeza Elected Shareholder

Ralph Baeza, PE, LEED AP, a senior electrical engineer in Miami, has been elected a TLC shareholder. An indispensable member of the TLC team, Ralph draws on his 28 years of experience to mentor younger staff and secure new projects and clients. He is also firmly committed to promoting TLC as a "one-firm team" throughout the design communities, both locally and abroad. His projects include the Florida International University Football Stadium, the LEED-CI Silver Gazit Office Renovation, the Barry University Main Campus Master Plan, the Port of Miami Terminals B and C Upgrades and the Florida Memorial University Student Housing, all of them located in Miami Dade County.



Emily Carrier Named to ACE Mentor Program Board

Jacksonville's Emily Crews Carrier has been elected to the board of the ACE Mentor Program of Northeast Florida. The program's mission is to increase high school students' awareness of career opportunities in architecture, construction and engineering and to provide scholarship opportunities. Jacksonville's Ryan Fryman and Becky Grove are mentors in the program.



Joe Fleming Passes ASHRAE's New BEMP Exam

Joe Fleming, EI, BD+C, a mechanical engineer in the Deerfield office, has become the first TLC engineer to pass ASHRAE’s new Building Energy Modeling Professional exam. The BEMP certification program was launched in January with a pencil and paper exam in conjunction with ASHRAE’s Winter Conference and AHR Expo in Orlando. The aim of the program is to ensure that professionals modeling a building’s energy use have the skills necessary to produce an accurate model.



New Heights Elementary School Named ACG Horizon Winner

New Heights Elementary School in St. Petersburg has been named winner of the ACG 2010 Horizon Award. TLC's Tampa office provided LEED commissioning for the HVAC, domestic hot water and lighting control systems for the school, which is certified LEED Gold for New Construction by the U.S. Green Building Council.



Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center Wins NAIOP Award

Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach was named Medical Building of the Year at last week's NAIOP Central Florida Awards Ceremony. Divisions 81 and 16 teamed with HuntonBrady Architects for this $151 million project, which also included a new medical office building and new central plant. The new hospital is a replacement facility for Florida Hospital Ormond.



Laura Lewis Becomes Adjunct Professor

Associate and Structural Project Engineer Laura Lewis, P.E., can now add Professor to her accomplishments. She has become an adjunct professor at the University of Central Florida teaching Structural Steel for the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering.



Eric Cepull and Travis Lau Rejoin TLC

Two former staffers have rejoined TLC. Eric Cepull, PE, (above left) a former mechanical engineer in TLC's Healthcare Division, is now a mechanical engineer in the Orlando Division. Eric is a LEED AP and a Healthcare Facility Design Professional. And Travis Lau, PE, (above right) formerly in our Tampa office, has joined the Orlando Healthcare Division as a mechanical project engineer.



Healthcare Engineers Lead ASHRAE Student Tour

On Sunday, Jan. 24, more than 200 engineering students from all over the U.S. who are taking part in the ASHRAE Student Design Competition toured the Energy Office Building and Ginsburg Tower at Florida Hospital's Orlando campus that TLC's Healthcare Division designed. Principal and Senior Project Manager Mark Costello, PE, and Principal and Senior Electrical Engineer Chris Mouer, PE, assisted by Florida Hospital staff and some local and national ASHRAE members, led those tours. The students were in Orlando for the ASHRAE/AHR Annual Meeting and Trade Show occurring at the Orange County Convention Center/Shingle Creek Resort. The student design project this year is focused on energy efficient healthcare HVAC design and is modeled conceptually on the Ginsburg Tower's architectural floor plan, thus the tour provided a resoundingly strong visual connection to the design efforts they are performing.



Rebecca Grove Joins TLC as Mechanical Engineer

Rebecca Grove has joined TLC Engineering for Architecture as a mechanical engineer in the Jacksonville office. A native of Ohio, Rebecca has bachelor's degrees with honors in mechanical engineering and mathematics from Youngstown State University and a Master's degree in engineering and applied science from Yale University. She is a U.S. Green Building Council LEED Accredited Professional and a certified EIT. Since 2008 she has been a volunteer with the ACE Mentor Program for students interested in careers in architecture, construction and engineering. She was formerly senior engineer for an international engineering company and is experienced in HVAC, plumbing and fire protection design for commercial and institutional buildings.



TLC Co-Founder Passes Away at Age 82

With the death of John Tilden on Jan. 20, TLC Engineering for Architecture has lost the co-founder of the firm. John started the firm in 1955 and continued to practice as a structural engineer until his retirement in 1992. During his career he was the engineer of record on many projects around Orlando and Central Florida. Between 1955 and 1992, the firm grew from very modest beginnings to more than 100 people in four offices, including one in Cleveland, Ohio. In early 1991 as John was planning his retirement, there were five shareholders. Today 55 of our staff are owners. That growth which sprang from John's early start has continued to drive TLC to its present staff of 300 in 10 offices. More than 30 staff from 1992 remain at TLC and remember John as a friend and colleague. John was held in high regard by colleagues around the state and the many architects and building owners for whom he provided engineering services.



Mike Boyle Acquires HR Certificate

Corporate Support's Mike Boyle has passed the HR Certification Institute's exam to become a Senior Professional of Human Resources. Mike is a Corporate Recruitment/Retention Specialist in the Orlando office.



Laura Lewis On Conference Planning Committee

The Orlando Division's Laura Lewis, PE, is on the local planning committee for the first-ever combined Structures Congress/North American Steel Construction Conference (NASCC) with the American Institute of Steel Construction and Structural Engineering Institute. The event will provide a forum to discuss challenges in bridging the gap between structural engineering education and professional practice highlighting state-of- art research. The local planning committee will provide an assortment of topics on what structural engineers find important.
