University of Florida’s Southwest Expansion is the first building in Florida and the first athletic facility in the nation to attain USGBC LEED Platinum certification, the highest ranking available. The three-story expansion to the James W. “Bill” Heavener Football Complex includes offices, conference rooms, weight-training areas, a gift shop and rest rooms. TLC’s energy modeling services helped drive the decisions that would affect the building’s overall energy consumption. The resulting energy saving features exceed state and national standards by 35% and include high efficiency glazing on glass, insulation and reflective materials, which make the heating and air conditioning more efficient. Energy efficient lighting and light sensors allow individual lighting preferences and turn off automatically when the room is empty. The building also has a system for analyzing future energy use. The design reduced 40% of indoor water use with its low-flow fixtures, dual-flush toilets and water-saving shower heads. As the commissioning agent, TLC confirmed that the fundamental building systems were designed and constructed according to the owner’s vision and that the facilities staff knows how to operate and maintain the systems.
