The Robert and Judi Prokop Newman Alumni Center will leave a light ecological footprint. High efficiency water and power systems, lots of natural lighting, and recycled or renewable construction materials make the four-story building a model of sustainability. Early in design, TLC engineers created an energy model that allowed them to determine the most effective energy-saving strategies. These included using sensor-operated faucets and low-flow toilets and urinals for a projected 30% reduction in water use. The HVAC equipment employs high efficiency fans and motors to produce similar savings. Lighting controls, occupancy sensors, dimmer switches and skylights will help reduce power use and energy costs while strategic positioning of the outside light fixtures will lessen light pollution.
