The Allied Health and Sciences Building at Valencia Community College West Campus is the first certified green building at the college, having achieved USGBC LEED NC 2.2 Gold. The facility gives the college more room to expand and helps serve the community by training workers for health care and science-related occupations. TLC designed the HVAC system to achieve more than 20% in annual energy cost savings. This, coupled with energy-efficient lights, windows and insulation, makes the building 28% more efficient than a conventional building and saves the college about $41,000 in annual energy costs. Our design goal was to provide state-of-the-art laboratory space on a relatively modest budget. This meant making sure the complex laboratory systems operate as designed to maintain appropriate conditions in each individual laboratory; at the same time the lab systems must interact with all other building systems to provide an efficient and comfortable overall building. Providing accurate energy modeling for a complex lab facility was challenging due to the specific air change requirements and exhaust needs of the spaces. Computer modeling was used in the design for the building envelope, HVAC systems, and lighting.
