Winnie
Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies serves Central Floridas
growing need for womens and neonatal intensive care
services. The new 11-story hospital has 273 patient beds,
30 labor and delivery rooms, a surgical unit, a post anesthesia
care unit, and a fetal diagnostic care center. The neonatal
intensive care unit (NICU), the fourth largest in the
country, is designed to provide the highest level of care
for high-risk newborns. TLC joined architect Jonathan
Bailey Associates to provide construction administration
services for Winnie Palmer Hospital shortly after construction
was begun and we ultimately became the engineer of record
for the project. Among other services, TLC conducted a
review of the security design including the infant abduction
prevention systems. Every element in the new hospital
contributes to a healing environment, including warm colors
to reduce stress, all private patient rooms flooded with
natural light, nurses stations located near patient
rooms, and acoustic controls to diminish noise levels.
Flexible interior spaces make it easier for the hospital
to respond to changing needs while the top two floors
are shelled in for future use. The hospital is the recipient
of the 2006 Project of the Year and Eagle awards by the
Associated Builders and Contractors Central Florida Chapter
and Southeast Construction magazine's 2006 Healthcare
Merit Award.
